be a freelance blogger

If you’re looking for a fun and flexible way to earn money on the side, definitely consider freelance blogging. With tens of thousands of blogs online, there will never be a shortage of demand for online content. The cool thing too is that many businesses have caught on blogging as a great way to draw in potential customers, so rates are much higher than before. Even if you do this part-time, you can earn a few thousands dollars a month.

Now this might not happen right away, but with practice and consistent work, you can make some decent money on the side.

Learn to Write Well and Effectively

This tip is a given. If you don’t write well, then why would someone want to hire you? If you’re not confident as a writer, you can start by reading blogs that you think are good and seeing what makes them so. You can even start your own blog and practice by writing there to build up your skills.

Writing effectively is also another skill that is much valued. Now the client doesn’t care how fast you write, but you should. If you’re still doing this on the side, you only have so many hours in the day. To write a good blog post, you’ll need to do research, sometimes interview people, outline your blog post then write the draft. For a blog post of 500 words, it may take you at least an hour or more. So if you can write a quality post and do it relatively quickly, it means you can take on more clients.

Build Your Portfolio

When pitching your services to potential clients, you’ll need to show them some work to prove that you’re a good writer. If you’re just starting out, you can always point to blog posts on your own blog. If you don’t have one, you can guest post on other blogs. This is where you can write a blog post on another blog. Many editors find that more credible because you have to go through an approval process to get a blog on someone else’s website. There are also places where they pay for guest posts, so you get paid while building up your portfolio.

Other ways to build your portfolio is to pitch a business and write one post for free. If they like it, you can negotiate with them about paid posts moving forward.

Pitch and Get Some Work

It’s sounds so easy to just pitch and get work just like that, right? It can be! So many of us use fear as an excuse not to do something. We get scared of rejection so we don’t want to try at all. Well guess what? You will most likely get rejected, so that’s something you have to face head on.

To find work, you can head to freelance writing job boards to start or even approach your favorite blogs. Simply send them an email with links to your portfolio, suggest a few topics for blogs and follow up if you need to.

You might be pleasantly surprised at how quickly your freelance blogging business will grow in a few short weeks of consistent pitching and hard work.
