How To Reduce Meat Consumption To Save Money
Meat is a staple in the modern diet. It provides our body with a great deal of protein and other nutrients. The problem with meat consumption, however, is the high costs. While some cuts of meat like ground turkey and chicken legs are cost-effective, many are not. Meat is the most costly item going into my grocery cart and makes up the largest part of my grocery budget. If this is true for you, here’s info on how to reduce meat consumption to save money.
Fish
When meat kills the budget, go for seafood selections instead. You can often buy seafood by the pound or find seafood cutlets in the freezer section of the grocery store. It’s not uncommon to find these products on sale. When I’m in the grocery store, I love getting the Aqua Star Salmon Fillet for $6.99. It makes up to six servings, which is enough for lunch and dinner for my family. I also shop for shrimp by the pound or opt for frozen seafood offerings like marinated mussels that I typically find for about $2.99 a box.
Other Sources of Protein
While meat makes up a large part of our protein consumption, it’s not the only source. Double down on beans, legumes, nuts, dairy, eggs, and whole wheat. You can find all of these items cheap at most stores. Along with protein, dairy offers calcium. Other protein selections are good sources of iron, B vitamin, potassium, folate, and zinc. All of these nutrients are good for overall health.
Plant-based Selections
Contrary to what people say, eating a more plant-based or vegan diet can be done on a budget. I regularly enjoy fresh fruit and vegetable selections. Eating dark leafy greens like collards and spinach is great in a vegan pasta dish, soup, or salad. You can also opt for potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and fresh melon, grapes, and berries. These products cost way less than meat, especially if you are shopping for them when they are on sale in-store. You can also turn them into some creative and fulfilling dishes.
