Should You Invest in Art? 5 Podcast Episodes To Help You Decide.

invest in art

The art world has always fascinated me. The characters, the auctions, the drama that surrounds it all … it’s a fascinating world. And I’ve always wondered if I should invest in art. It seems like a daunting form of investment. But it also seems like a lot of fun. So, to help me decide, I opted to delve into some podcast episodes that discuss the topic. If investing in art is something that interests you then perhaps you, too, would like these episodes:

1. Should You Invest in Art?

Guest speaker James Pickford shares some thoughts about investing in art. He discusses that it can take years for art to gain value. More importantly, he emphasizes that there are buyer and seller fees at auction that make it hard to make a profit. However, as host Claer Barrett points out, you can enjoy art on your wall while you can’t “pin a share certificate on your wall and gaze in wonder at it.”

2. How to Invest in Fine Art with Beer Money

  • Show: Wealth Formula
  • Episode Date: 9/1/2019
  • Length: 40 minutes although the first half is a lengthy introduction

In the first part of the podcast, the host discusses his interest in vintage cars. He compares this to fine art, although of course collecting cars is a bit different than collecting art. That said, if you happen to like old cars, then this portion might interest you.

Otherwise, skip ahead to guest Scott Lynn. He gives details information about investing in art. He uses language that requires you to have some familiarity with investing. If you already invest in other ways, then you should be able to follow along just fine. Learn about Blue Chip artists and provenance.

3. Scott Lynn: How to Invest in Fine Art

As I was researching this topic, I was surprised to see another podcast interview Scott Lynn. In this episode, he goes into a lot more detail about his business, Masterworks.io. It offers a unique model where you can purchase shares in major art pieces. This is a business that helps people invest in Blue Chip art. If you might want to start investing in art, then his business could be a great place to start.

4. Sotheby’s Michael Klein on the Art Market During the Covid-19 Pandemic

  • Show: ArtTactic
  • Episode Date: 10/1/2020
  • Length: 20 minutes

If you’re interested in learning about contemporary issues in art investment then you don’t want to miss this episode. And if you enjoy hearing from experts about investing in art then be sure to check out ArtTactic’s full Art Investment Series, in which they speak to a variety of professionals in the industry about precisely this topic.

5. Planet Monet

  • Show: Planet Money
  • Episode Date: 2/9/2018
  • Length: 17 minutes

This episode talks about something called “freeports.” These are tax havens for art collectors. Essentially, they’re country-less warehouses for keeping art locked away while it, hopefully, gains value. If the oddities of investing in art interest you then listen to this episode.
