My Experience as a Paid Online Mock Juror
Years ago I had a one-time gig as a mock juror. I went to a hotel’s conference center for the day. If I recall correctly, I earned $50. However, times have changed since that. I recently signed up to be an online mock juror. For three hours of time at home, I earned $90. Let me tell you a little bit more about my experience.
How To Get Paid to Be An Online Mock Juror
I actually hadn’t even realized until recently that this opportunity exists. However, I was browsing through a variety of “side gig” opportunities and came across this idea. So, I started looking into how to get paid to be a mock trial juror online. It turns out that there are a bunch of companies that you can sign up with. I explored my options and filled out applications on a variety of sites.
Actually, it’s more like you fill out a profile, not an application. You have to meet minimum requirements. For example, you have to be over the age of 18. You can’t have a felony on your record. And of course since you’re applying to work online you have to have adequate time and Internet bandwidth to do the job. It’s all pretty simple. So, I filled out the forms and waited.
My First Online Mock Trial Juror Experience
It took a couple of weeks for me to get my first opportunity. A company I’d signed up with emailed me. They were looking for last-minute mock jurors to complete a three-hour job ASAP. It was a Friday night. However, all I was doing was watching reality TV at home while snuggling my puppy. So, I thought, “why not?”
It was easy to sign into the site. The instructions were clear. Basically, here’s what I had to do:
- Watch the plaintiff present their case. This took about an hour.
- Answer a few questions about how I thought the trial was going so far.
- Watch the defendant present their case. This took another hour.
- Answer 122 questions giving my opinions. This took about 30-40 minutes.
The questions were half multiple choice and have short essay. Basically, they’d ask a multiple choice question first. For example, “on a scale of 1-5 how much did this particular piece of evidence affect your view?” Then they’d ask you to expand on that in the next question. So you could write as much or as little as you wanted for those.
Note that in this case I just gave my opinions on my own. I didn’t collaborate with other jurors in any way. I’m not sure if this is always how the experience works.
What It Was Like Doing The Work
In order to do this work, you have to have an interest in court trials. I don’t particularly like jury duty because the process is tedious. However, done from my own home with the ability to pause the video as needed, I didn’t mind it so much. It’s still a fairly tedious process. Not all cases are interesting. However, I learned a few things that I didn’t know. It wasn’t bad. And I was getting paid to be there and to give my opinion.
Can You Get a Job As An Online Mock Juror?
I spent about 2.5 hours on this job. For that, I received $90. However, this is slightly higher than this firm typically pays. They paid a little extra because it was a last minute gig. A few days after I did the job, they asked me to complete about six more questions. It only took a few minutes, and they gave me a bonus $5 for the work.
So, it was good hourly pay. However, it’s been a few weeks since I signed up with these sites, and that’s the only gig offer I’ve received. Therefore, I would say that this is excellent occasional income as a side gig. However, it’s not a “job” that you can do full-time or even part-time.
